Mother and Two Daughters Die as Another Building Collapses in Lagos

Tragedy struck on tuesday in Lagos when a two-storey building partially collapsed killing three people at Church Street, Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, Isolo. The ill-fated block marked M20, according to eyewitnesses collapsed at about midnight instantly killing two sisters Toyin and Bukky Coker, while their aged mother was later confirmed dead at an undisclosed hospital where she was rushed to for treatment.
Daily Sun gathered that the late Toyin was an employee of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and was in her early 30’s while her younger sister, Bukky who was in her late 20’s, was awaiting her National Youth Service Corps posting. Most residents told Daily Sun that the collapsed block had shown signs of distress, as there were visible cracks on the walls. The building, it was discovered was already marked for demolition, but that the Lagos State officials were not seen again after the action was taken.
According to a resident of the collapsed building, Amodu Omoniyi Eyitayo, who miraculously escaped death, he felt vibration from the building and noticed that particles of sand, blocks and cement were falling from the wall in his room, and quickly moved to evacuate his personal effects. “I moved into my apartment in September this year and I occupy the second flat which is on the ground floor. Before I came for the inspection of the house,

I had already paid my rent to a man called Baba Ali who is the agent and caretaker of the flat which I occupied. After moving in, one of my neighbours, who lives above asked if I was not aware that the house had been marked for demolition by the government. I told him that I had no idea. The next week, another neighbor asked me why I rented the house considering the fact that it had been marked for demolition. When I heard this the second time, I called Baba Ali on the issue but he refused to give me audience.
I kept putting pressure on him so that he could get me another apartment, but he was evasive and at a point, he told me that there was nothing wrong with the house and that I should have no fear. After a short while, I started noticing that the plasters on the wall were falling off and the tiles on the floor were breaking and this made me worry about my safety, but since I already paid my rent and no other money, there was nothing I could do,” he narrated.

Mr. Eyitayo recalled that on Tuesday evening, when he returned from the church, he wasn’t comfortable and his mind told him to touch the wall. “When I did, the part that I touched fell down and I could see the outside of the house from my room,” he said “I also observed that sand and cement particles were dropping from the walls and the ceiling, I heard a cracking noise in the wall and I became alarmed.
By 11pm, I put a call to Baba Ali to come and see what was happening because other occupants of the building said that they were experiencing the same thing. Baba came that night and said it was too dangerous to remain in the house and he got a place for me and my flat mate to spend the night. But because I was supposed to have an interview the next day, I had to pack my credentials, clothes and other personal effects. But before leaving that night, I went with my friend upstairs to the middle flat where I met Mrs. Coker.
I told her of my observations and advised her to leave the building immediately because I had a strong feeling that it will collapse at any time. When I told her, she asked if I was the person living downstairs and I said yes, she then thanked me and said she had heard what I said and that was all we discussed. By the time I had taken all my important documents, it was some minutes past 12midnight and I had barely stepped out of the house when it came crumbling down.”

A resident of the estate who spoke on condition of anonymity told Daily Sun that she used to occupy the flat where Mr. Eyitayo now occupy, but had to move out with her family owing to the deplorable condition of the house. She said she was friendly with the late Mrs. Coker and described her as an individualistic woman who always stood by what she believed. “She had always known about the situation of the house but insisted that she was not going to leave until the government renovates it. The irony of it is that she owns three flats which are situated around Oja Bus stop in the estate, but refused to live there and had recently evicted the tenants and refunded their rent to them.
We do not know her reason but we learned that she said she did not want anyone living there anymore” she said. A member of the Estate Residents Association, Mr. Dimeji Gbadamosi said it was unfortunate that the incidence occurred and blamed the National Emergnecy Maintenance Agency (NEMA), for not responding promptly. He said that despite informing the agency immediately the incidence occurred, they did not respond till about 7am, by which time the bodies had already been evacuated by youths in the neighborhood. “This incidence occurred at about 12.05pm and I reliably got information that NEMA, the fire service and the Red Cross were informed, but they did not respond on time.

The Red Cross came by 6am, while NEMA came at about 7am, by which time the bodies of the dead had been evacuated by the youths and deposited at the Isolo General Hospital mortuary,” he said. Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Kehinde Gbamigbetan, under whose jurisdiction the estate falls said he was alerted to the incident by 3am, and arrived there almost immediately. According to him, “When I was informed about the incident, I immediately called 767 which is one of Lagos State emergency line, and informed them about it. By the time I got there 15 minutes later, the young men in the estate had evacuated the corpses.
I was told that residents of the building and some of those around had written series of letters to the Lagos State Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC). However, I will find out from them if there was any correspondence from the residents. The estate operates under a zonal structure and each block operates under a zone. So when a thing like this happens, the zonal chairman will inform the resident association who in turn should inform the Local Council.

The residents of the house have said that they noticed that the building walls were cracking and some were already caving in. In such a situation, the reasonable thing to do is not to remain in the building but to move to a safer house since it was no longer habitable. It is unfortunate that the residents knew about the situation of the house and still stayed. I learnt they were told to evacuate, yet they remained there. The Lagos Physical Planning Authority (LASPPDA) and other agencies in charge of the estate are all here and they will take inventory of the extent of the damage and decide on the way forward.”
Shortly after the incidence, officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) were seen marking some buildings around the vicinity for assessment, and possible demolished. As at the time of filing this report, a total of eight houses were marked for assessment and the residents of the marked buildings were given 48 hours to vacate. Bimbola Odunayo, the General Manager of LASBCA said the incidence was very unfortunate, but assured that the agency will do everything within its power to ensure that the situation is under control.

According to her, “Unfortunately, we did not receive any correspondence from the tenants about the condition of the house but with what has happened we are going to commence work immediately to ensure that those living in houses that are marked for assessment are safely evacuated. We will soon begin reconstruction and maintenance of the buildings which are due for demolition and they will be done with standard building materials.

The government will do everything within its power to ensure that this type of incidence does not occur again.” General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed to journalists that the corpses were brought out of the rubble and thanked those who were involved in the evacuation. “When we got the information, I immediately alerted our local rescue team and we moved to the scene.

We met with other stakeholders and decided that the other three flats will be pulled down. We gave the occupants of the flats some time to move their luggage, and then we pulled down the structure. We have appealed to all the local council chairmen to put in place local emergency response committees in their respective councils to prevent this from happening.”

A 35-year-old man  presumably made love  with a 15-year-old schoolgirl and infected her with a Sexually Transferred Infection (STI).
Police spokesperson  Inspector Peter Zhanero could neither verify nor refute the claim, however claimed he would check if the supposed culprit  has been apprehended.
“At the moment I am not in the light concerning that story yet I will certainly assess and also would get back to you,” stated Insp Zhanero.
His fellow taxi drivers who identified the accused Eddy said the incident happened on Wednesday.
“One of our colleagues  has fallen in love with a young girl  at Ndarama High School and slept with her. The girl is believed to be 15 years old and she was infected with an STI. As we speak the man is in police custody ,” said a taxi driver.
“All hell broke loose when the girl allegedly fell sick and went to the clinic where she was diagnosed with an STI. Money Doubler Caught in Gombe Gets 25 Year Jail Sentence

Justice Babatunde O. Quadri of the Federal High Court sitting in Gombe has sentenced to 25 years imprisonment Abdullahi Bello who was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a five count charge of conspiracy, dealing in and possession of counterfeit Nigerian currency notes

The offence for which Bello, who was arraigned on October 31, 2012, was convicted, are contrary to Sections 6 (2) (b) and 4 (1) of the Counterfeit Currency (Special Provision) Act CAP C35 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
Bello who pleaded guilty to all the charges is to spend five years in jail on each count, but the sentences are to run concurrently.
Bello had earlier pleaded guilty when he was arraigned on October 31, prompting the judge to adjourn sentencing till Friday November 2, 2012. But on the adjourned date, Bello changed his guilty plea to “not guilty”, forcing the court to adjourn till November 5, 2012.
But in a dramatic twist, Bello stepped into the dock, pleading with the trial Judge and EFCC Prosecution Counsel, Al Qasim Ja’afar, to forgive him for what transpired in court on November 2, when he denied the charges against him. He begged he was wrongly advised by some inmates he met while in prison custody. But the Judge stopped him, advising him to keep his breathe, as his action may be prejudicial to the proceedings of the day.

Prosecution Counsel however amended the six count charges to five before reading the charges all over again to the accused. Prosecution called a witness to prove its case against Bello .
Prosecution witness, Ahmed Bala Mohammed, an operative of the EFCC, narrated to the court how the Commission acted on intelligence report concerning some persons who are in the business of defrauding innocent persons by using fake Nigerian Naira currencies. He told the court how Bello was arrested at the Sabon Main Market on 14 June, 2012. According to Mohammed, at the point of arrest, 38 pieces of suspected counterfeit N500 (Five hundred naira) notes amounting to N19, 000 were found on him.
Mohammed further told the court that forensic examination confirmed the currency notes found on Bello to be fake, as they lacked certain security features and have repeated serial numbers.
Bello confessed he was lured into the business by a neighbour who is presently at large. The accused confessed he had earlier this year been arrested by the Police in Gombe for a similar offence, but was granted bail. He claimed to have introduced some friends and associates, who are now at large, to the fraudulent business.
Following the guilty plea by the accused, EFCC counsel, Ja’afar, prayed the court to convict the accused person accordingly.
Justice Quadri observed that Bello is a serial offender and therefore sentenced him to 5 years on each count with hard labour to serve as deterrent to others.

Mother Bath`s Daughter with Acid and tells BBC it was her Destiny to Die

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—A Pakistani mother who killed her teenage daughter by dousing her with acid for looking at a boy has told the BBC it was the girl’s destiny to die in this way.
Police in Pakistan-administered Kashmir arrested Mohammad Zafar and his wife, Zaheen, for the October 29 attack on their daughter Anusha, 15, who died in hospital two days later after suffering horrific acid burns.
So-called “honor” attacks are common in deeply conservative Pakistan. Rights activists say more than 900 women were murdered last year after being accused of bringing shame on the family in some way.
Speaking from their police cells, the father told the BBC they had warned Anusha before about looking at boys, while the mother described how her daughter had begged for forgiveness.
“She said, ‘I didn’t do it on purpose, I won’t do it again,” the mother, whose own arm bore an injury from the acid, told the BBC.
“By then I had thrown the acid. It was her destiny to die this way.”
The parents waited two days to take Anusha to hospital. A doctor told AFP the teenager arrived in a “very critical condition” with almost 70 percent burns.

Okada riders beat up LASTMA officers

Aggrieved riders of motorcycles popularly called Okada plying Magodo area of Lagos State took to the Ojodu Berger road on Monday to engage some officers of the Lagos State Traffic and Management Authority in a fight after a raid by a combined team of policemen and LASTMA officers.

Our correspondent gathered that an Okada rider, said to be plying one of the restricted routes, was chased by the patrol teams.

An eyewitness said when they left after chasing other Okada riders away, others went on the rampage threatening to attack any LASTMA man in sight.

When our correspondent arrived at the scene of the incident, some of the protesting Okada riders were seen blocking the Roundabout at the end of the road with a traffic box.
They also beat two officers of the LASTMA controlling traffic on the road before they were rescued by passers-by and members of the Ojodu-Berger chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.

Some of the motorcycle riders said they were not operating on any of the restricted routes in the state and could not understand why the police had continued to molest them.
The incident caused a gridlock before members of the Ojodu-Berger chapter of the NURTW mobilised themselves to control the traffic.

Chairman of the Ojodu-Berger Park of the NURTW, Mr. Tokunbo Seriki said the police were on a “sanitising” exercise across motor parks in the area.

He said it was after they finished checking the park that they decided to move to the Okada Park.
Seriki said, ‘‘I was told that a fight was about to break between the LASTMA officers and the Okada riders, so I quickly moved in with my officers.  This axis is known for peace and we will not compromise the peace for anything. We will control the traffic till we are sure the officers are safe.”

Lobatan:::My Neighbour’s Loud S*x Won’t Let Me Sleep At Night

Please forgive me if you feel offended after reading this piece but I can’t hide it again. Problem shared is problem solved, so goes a popular saying.

Read the story of a factory worker who cant sleep because of his neighbours wild sex...

I am a factory worker living in a one-room apartment (face me I face you) in Orile area of Lagos. I’m still waiting to get a better job so I
could settle down and probably get married, but you know how ghetto life be na. That is by the way.
A man moved into our compound few months back and since then, I’ve been having series of ‘nightmares.’
During the recent hot weather, it has been impossible to sleep without ventilation, and on several occasions, my next-door neighbor
shrieks throughout the night. Shouting in her native dialect; “yee egba mi oo, mogbe oo, o n dunmi oo, o n taa mi oo, fi mi le o (meaning,
“save me oh, am dying oh) wouldn’t let me sleep. I am a light sleeper and feel irate about this noise pollution.
All these would force me to keep all night and I would resume work the following morning dozing. Recently, I was even queried for
sleeping on duty.
I pleaded with him last week to tone down the volume of their ‘noisy sex’ but he asked me to go and get married or mind my business.
Earplugs don’t seem to do the trick and I’m tired of hearing this ‘noise pollution’.
Now, I cant take it anymore, I’m thinking of confronting him or report him to the police.
What should I do?

UNIPORT 4 – I Watched As Aluu People Killed My Brother..Says Tekena Sister

A sister of one of the four University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) students brutally
murdered last Friday in Umuokiri village, Aluu, Rivers State, has narrated how her younger brother and his friends were lynched.
Miss Ibisobia Elkanah, elder sister of Tekena Friday Elkanah, revealed yesterday that policemen visited the scene where the students
were burnt to death after they were severely injured and that one of the law enforcement agents told the perpetrators of the dastardly act
“to burn them alive”
The murdered students, Chiadika Lordson, Ugonna Kelechi Obusor, Mike Lloyd Toku, and Tekena Elkanah, all part two students,
were murdered in cold blood over alleged theft of a laptop computer and a blackberry phone. Ibisobia, a part-time final year student of
Marketing, at the same university who witnessed the incident, said on that fateful day, at about 7.30 am, she was at the house of her girl
friend in the community when she heard people shouting outside. “I dashed out and beckoned on my friend to come since she lived in the area.

The thing attracted much noise and attention. I went there but did not actually see or recognize any of them, due to the crowd. “I heard when people were saying the people they (vigilance group) caught were strangers; that they want to burn them.
They said they were asking them questions, so that they could know their senders.” She said after that, she went back to her friend’s house, but could not stay there. “I went back again. I went through the bush path so that I could see them properly. I started jumping to
see if I could see them. I jumped again but saw nothing. I jumped the second time and I saw Tekena. Tekena happened to be my brother. “I told myself that I was not seeing well, this thing is a lie. I jumped the third time, I saw Lloyd (one of the victims). So, I started shouting.
From what I gathered, the first time I came, they said they were not known; that they were strangers. As I identified them, I started shouting. Ibisobia said she continued shouting that Tekena was her brother, saying that he came to her on Thursday in school and she
gave him his schoolfees. “I told them that somebody should allow me to ask him what happened and what he came to do. He would confide in me. He was wailing and in a pool of blood.”
“Tekena has been my younger brother for many years. I saw them as they lay in the water naked with leaves covering their nakedness.”
His elder sister said she struggled and entered the crowd. Somebody shouted “Who is that? What is she doing inside?” “People were pushing me and I started crying. He is my brother! He is not a thief! Somebody behind me said O’girlrun for your life.
About two persons turned and asked, are you sure he is your brother, and said may be I was the person that sent him to go and steal.” Ibisobia replied them that how could she send him, that she did not look as such. ‘They said I should run for my life that I would be the next one, fifth person.” The young lady lamented that before she could get to her friend’s room to call her family members, she learnt that the mob had taken them to the burrow pit. “So, I went there again.
I called my family and they started coming. The police van came, went into the mob and they were talking to them (youths). The people kept quiet as police were making statements. “I heard them laughing. You know, they were happy. They kept quiet again. Police talked and they laughed again. The next was for me to see three policemen coming out of the mob, boarded their van. And, one of the said
“burn them alive”. “I must confess, I was gripped with fear.
I had the intention to talk to the man that said they should be burnt alive. As soon as the police drove off, I saw the flames. I was thinking they burnt them after they had killed them. Later, I discovered that they were burnt while they were alive.

Robbers Gun Battle Policemen for 4Hrs in Idimu

A gang of dare-devil robbers last weekend, engaged men of Idimu Police Command in four hours of midnight gun duel in an attempt to rob a top Nigerian Breweries distributor at Unity Estate, along Egbeda-Idimu Road, Lagos, who was away in London. In the war-like encounter, there were no casualties but one woman was wounded in the leg and rushed to a nearby hospital by the police for treatment.
The operation was led by the Area ‘M’ Police Commander, ACP Ibrahim Kaoje and supported by at least six divisional police officers and their men to dislodge the robbers who mistakenly dropped one of their handsets at the scene of the robbery. Before the Unity Estate operation, the robbers had struck at Ejigbo, Agege, Iyana-Ipaja and Gowon Estate. According to informed sources, the robbers’ operations at Gowon Estate and Idimu area were very fierce, creating fear and pandemonium in the areas because of the sophistication of the weapons used by the robbers.

Apparently working on information, the robbers targeted the distributor’s residence to dispossess him of his market sales for last week, unaware he had travelled to London. Police sources said the robbers gained entry into the house through the window and commenced operation. But a distress call to the Idimu Area Command saved the situation. It was a do-or-die operation by the robbers as they engaged the police in a shoot-out without ceasing between 12 midnight and 4 am in the morning.

The police had commenced investigation to determine the involvement of the insiders in the matter. Meanwhile, police division at Bar Beach have arrested another gang of robbers at Victoria Island Lagos. The policemen on patrol caught the gang in a car parked at the Law School gate Victoria Island with at least, five occupants, planning for operation. On sighting a police patrol van, the robbers opened fire on the policemen who responded immediately. Two of the robbers were apprehended and others escaped.
One locally made pistol with three rounds of live cartridges, one Opel Astra saloon car, one driver’s licence, one Ecobank savings withdrawal slip, one Oceanic ATM card, one Tecno phone, vehicle particulars and a sum of N11,100.10 were found in the vehicle. The Divisional police officer for the area, CSP Adegoke Fayoade, confirmed the arrested two suspected robbers (names withheld), but declined to comment further. Daily Sun gathered that the suspects had been transferred to SARS, Ikeja for further investigation.
